Goodbye Glasgow, roll on the Gold Coast

BYE bye ever-so wet Glasgow, bring on the tropical heat of Gold Coast in 2018.

The 20th and, many are saying, the best ever Commonwealth Games ended with the predictable fireworks and with one big music party at Hampden Park, the national stadium.

Tobyn Horton carried the Guernsey flag into the stadium as recognition of his excellence in island colours, but while the Sarnians partied along with 70 other nations, poor Horton was recovering from a fantastic effort to push the tour professionals from around the world in a bid to ambush their podium party.

On a day more suited to Delhi in the monsoon season, Horton and, to a lesser extent, James McLaughlin rode like heroes in the pelting rain.

Mechanical failure ultimately did for McLaughlin, while the lack of energy and, perhaps, the effects of antibiotic treatment, brought an end to Horton's challenge when he had spent 3hr 22min. in the thick of the medal chase.

Covered in towels and shaking through a combination of exhaustion and the chill, Horton said at the finish: 'I just did what I could'.

'It didn't go too bad, but I wasn't really feeling 100 per cent.

'I had a dicky elbow yesterday and I started taking antibiotics.'
