Returning Chumba's life has changed for better

KENYAN distance runner Reuben Chumba is returning for this month's Guernsey Waterfront Marathon and he is more determined than ever to take first place.

Published

A year ago he was denied by stomach cramps and fellow Kenyan Freddy Sittuk, who was a late entry, but good friend and local marathon star Mike Wilesmith has again raised the necessary funds to bring Chumba back over.

'He tells me that he's in the shape of his life, and will be chasing the bonus for breaking the course record in Guernsey,' said Wilesmith.

As well as Chumba, Wilesmith has been fundraising to bring a female Kenyan to the Channel Islands – in the form of Ednah Jeruto.

'She's not doing the Guernsey Marathon due to an injury setback, but will race the Worcester 10k, which is also Paula Radcliffe's comeback race, and she will also run the Jersey marathon.

'She's never left Kenya in her life, so my main concern is that she works out the flights and makes it here OK. But, seriously, it's a great chance for her to change her life just a Reuben has,' Wilesmith added.
