Bill-topper 'Wooly' excited by new Pole's potential

AS HE builds towards another tilt at the ABA championships, James Woolnough is confident of another strong performance at tonight's dinner boxing show.

The first of four St Pierre Park shows this season sees 12 bouts scheduled against Wales Select and with Matt Jennings unable to be matched up, it is again Woolnough topping the bill.

In his 65th career fight, he is looking for his 40th victory and against a new opponent, Matthew Salter, somebody that Woolnough says he has never heard of.

'It spices things up for me a bit really because, these days, I am regularly fighting the same people more than once,' he said.

'This is a complete step into the unknown for me and another good test ahead of the ABAs, which I want to be going into on a high, while also producing good performances.

The show also sees the debut of Polish heavyweight Tomasz Kot, who has been training at the Amalgamated Club for the last few months.

He has sparred with Woolnough in the gym and the island's most experienced boxer is impressed with what the Eastern European man offers.

'For a man who hasn't had a competitive fight before, you wouldn't know it because he has really good technique and a really nice jab on him,' said Woolnough.

'If he can turn that sparring form into the same in the ring, then I think he will do really well and could win quite a few fights because he is certainly talented.'

Tonight's schedule: Jake Fletcher v. Owain Holloway; Seb Fitzpatrick v. Leon Hares (bantam); Mason Smale v. Luke Rowlands (bantam); Liam Pringle v. Aron Syversen (bantam); Casey de la Mare v. Lewis Howells (welter); Jake Elliot v. James Fairley (lt-welter); Kot v. Mathew Price (heavy); Michael Crowley v. Colm Boston (welter); Nathan Green v. Chris Stephens (middle); Chris Sumner v.
