Poland too strong for GB's Watson and Murray

HOPES of Hopman Cup glory for Heather Watson and Andy Murray now hang by a thread after the British duo were beaten by Poland in their second group match in Perth.

After their opening success over France, this was a clash between the two sides with winning starts in Group B, but again Watson found the going tough against higher-ranked opposition.

This time it was Agnieszka Radwanska, the world No. 5 and former Wimbledon finalist, who Watson came up against in the singles rubber and as expected it was a comprehensive 6-3, 6-1 success for the Pole.

Just as in their opener, Andy Murray bailed Watson out – this time with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Jerzy Janowicz – to set up a deciding doubles rubber.

But on this occasion the British duo could not pull a win out of the bag and lost 6-4, 6-4, meaning a 2-1 win for Poland and a place at the top of the group.

With only one side from each group qualifying for the weekend's final, it means that progression is largely out of Watson and Murray's hands heading into their final group tie.
