Martin's tipped for success in the ring

AFTER opting to make boxing rather than Guernsey FC his priority in recent weeks, Tom Martin has been tipped for a successful career in the ring.

The 19-year-old has starred 32 times as a promising left-back on the football pitch for the Green Lions, but has not played since November.

So, after spending significant time training and sparring at the Amalgamated Boxing Club, he is on course to make his debut at St Pierre Park Hotel in mid-March.

And if his performances in training are anything to go by, Amalgamated head coach Ben Duff believes the sport has a talent on its hands.

'Tom Martin is probably the most naturally talented lad we have trained from scratch,' he explained.

Next week's opening show of 2015 has come too early for Martin, but there is still a strong 12-bout line-up for the visit of the North-East Select to St Pierre Park.

Billy Le Poullain tops the bill against Thomas Brazell and with the national ABA championships just around the corner, this is another opportunity for the fantastic Le Poullain to show his skills.

Guernsey v. North-East Select schedule:

Jake Fletcher v. E. Scannel (minimum weight); Chris Sumner v. Darren Richardson (light-welter); Ella Hamel v. Shauna Taylor (light); Mason Smale v. Harry Condren (bantam); Liam Pringle v. Rohan Wardale (light); Sam Masterman v. Nathan Cummisky (welter); Jack Elliot v. Tony Pyle (light-welter); Tomaz Kot v. Joe Langley (heavy); Michael Crowley v.
