AFTER his brilliant run to the quarter-finals a year ago, James Woolnough is targeting national ABA championship glory in the coming weeks.

The 25-year-old, comfortably Guernsey's most experienced boxer with 65 bouts to his name, has not been in action competitively since November through injury and then a suspension.

But he travels to Chippenham this weekend to begin the defence of the Western Counties title he won for the first time in 2014, with the aim to earn qualification into the national stages again.

Competing at welterweight, there are three boxers in action in Woolnough's half of the Western Counties.

'Every year I have gone that bit further and I genuinely believe I can go on to win the title and be the first Guernseyman ever to win a senior ABA title,' said Woolnough.
