Jennings fans shocked by KO

IT ALL ended with a shuddering knockout of Matt Jennings, but Guernsey still got the better of an entertaining Open Show at Beau Sejour on Saturday evening.

Despite the relatively low crowd present to watch the dozen fights, there was some cracking action and, pleasingly, not one bout that was a mismatch.

Many of those who had come would have been cheering for the bill-topping favourite Jennings, who took on Liam Richardson from the Yorkshire Select opposition.

A tight opening round where both men landed some good shots – which was awarded to Jennings on all of the judges' cards – gave little indication as to what would come in the second.

But within seconds of the restart the impressive Richardson had landed a big right-hander that hurt Jennings and helped set him up for the knockout some 30 seconds later.

That huge shot sent Jennings to the canvas with a sickening thud and, despite doing his best to get back up, referee Eamonn Gillease correctly waved it off.

It was not the way the home team would have wanted to end proceedings, but they can be buoyed by winning the overall contest 7-5.
