Ogier puts himself in the Island Games shop window

LEON OGIER was the man to beat over Easter weekend as the race for Island Games cycling places hotted up after a pair of road races and time trials.

All of the big locally-based names were in action across the weekend, although illness forced Aaron Bailey to withdraw from the final two rounds, having won the 10-mile time trial.

That helped Ogier to ultimately top the overall classification standings quite comfortably, as his consistency proved key in his success.

He won the final road race of the weekend, having finished as runner-up in both the opening road race and the 25-mile time trial, meaning his fifth place in race two was dropped from his tally.

That ensured a points total of five and that saw him win ahead of 18-year-old Jack English, whose 11 points saw him finish as overall runner-up at the head of a close battle.

Matt Osborn, Anthony Bleasdale and Steve Dawes followed him in third, fourth and fifth respectively, although in a sign of the competitiveness, the other race winners were Paul Brehaut and James Roe.

There are now just two more race weekends remaining before the Guernsey team for the summer's Island Games in Jersey is decided.
