Sayer masterminds 13-try play-off romp in the sun

When Guernsey 2nds coach Mark Stone was made aware that Luke Sayer could not travel with the firsts to Tonbridge due to child-care issues, he used all his persuasion skills to convince the former Championship level player to turnout for the second XV for the first leg of the CI league two-legged showdown.

And if anyone needed any convincing that Sayer was worth the pushing, no sooner had Dave Mahoney blown his whistle for the first time, the couple of dozen spectators lining the old Footes Lane pitch began to enjoy an 80-minute display of a master amateur rugby player at work.

Playing at stand-off, Sayer pulled all the strings in the 13-try 77-10 lunchtime romp in the sunshine which will surely make the second leg in Jersey on 25 April a formality in terms of the league title.

Pre-match, Guernsey worried about the potential threat of the speedy Les Quennevais centre Rupert Lee, who had destroyed our hopes in the recent inter-insular,.

But such was the dominance of the home side on this occasion, the skilful centre was restricted to only a few jinking incursions.
