Merrien into quarters after scare from Greechan

DISTANCE is no object for Guernsey's top bowlers.

Some 12,000 miles apart, Todd Priaulx at the Warilla club in New South Wales and Ali Merrien at the Jersey indoor club at Grainville have their sights set on winning world titles.

Priaulx yesterday added a 3-13, 9-6, 4-1 victory to the win he notched up in the World Cup 'Down Under' on Wednesday, and, although he has scored fewer shots than his opponents, he is unbeaten in his group and is handily situated in third place in his group.

With another seven group games to play, there's a long way to go before it will be established who will qualify for the knockout stages, but the Guernsey ace has made a more than satisfactory start to his campaign.

Nearer to home, in Jersey, the incomparable Ali Merrien is sitting at the top of her group in the WIBC world indoor bowls championships, having won all three round robin matches and she is looking forward to embarking on the knockout stage today.

After winning two matches on Wednesday, Merrien yesterday faced 14-year-old Chloe Greechan, who is the daughter of Jersey stars Thomas and Lindsey Greechan and, in the end, was relieved to get through on a tiebreak.
