Confident Chalmers impresses over one lap

TOM DRUCE lost a record, but nevertheless hailed the 400m performance of Cameron Chalmers, who set the local track and field season alight with a brilliant effort at Footes Lane.

At the start of the final week of Island Games qualifying Chalmers, 18, produced the performance of the day with a stunning 48.34sec. clocking for one lap and, in doing so, erased Druce's island U20 record from the books as well as putting himself third on Guernsey's all-time senior 400m list, behind Druce's 46.37 and Dale Garland's 46.5.

'I was quite impressed,' said Druce, the GIAAC's new development officer after retiring from competition last summer.

'He went out for a strong first 200, gave himself a chance of a good time and managed to hang on into a strong headwind.'

Chalmers' younger brother Alastair also raised a few eyebrows in winning both 100m and 200m events which were staged in strong headwinds on the straight under the Garenne Stand, as was Tuesday's final qualification meeting much to Druce's annoyance, as he was hoping to see some of the emerging youngsters post a standard.

'The winds have been horrendous. It has been bang against them,' said Druce, who watched Josh Allaway complete a 100-200 double from the younger Chalmers in midweek.
