Much-improved Guernsey can challenge for the title

GUERNSEY are incomparably better than they were two years ago ahead of the ICC European Division One T20 Championship, says director of cricket Nic Pothas.

After a morale-boosting final warm-up game ahead of tomorrow's tournament, Pothas also believes that his young side are capable of winning the six-team competition in Jersey.

The Sarnians begin their round-robin campaign with a double-header tomorrow, coming up against Denmark and Norway, both at Grainville.

Back in 2013, Guernsey reached the semi-finals of the same tournament – then 12 teams – but were thrashed by 113 runs by Denmark, with Freddie Klokker smashing 129 from 65 balls.

Pothas admits his side will be keen to avenge that defeat, but says that the state of the 14-man squad now is far improved from the 2013 group.

'Now we have a group that is contributing from everywhere with bat, ball and in the field, which is an area that we are 70% better than we were before,' he said.

With games being played every other day, there are reserve sessions for every match in the event of rain, with the tournament winners qualifying for the World Twenty20 Qualifier.
