Miley stunner wrecks gallant Rovers' hopes

A STUNNING strike from Shay Miley saw St Paul's crowned as the best junior side in the Channel Islands at a blustery Blanche Pierre Lane on Liberation Day.

The Caesarean champions undoubtedly went in as favourites against their Guernsey counterparts Rovers, but were pushed closer than many would have thought.

Trailing at half-time to Aaran Addis' header, St Paul's had to do it the hard way but duly obliged, scoring twice within 60 seconds early in the second-half to win it.

Ultimately, they could have won it by a few more than they did as they dominated after the break and squandered some glorious chances.

A team full of first team regulars and players in Jersey's upcoming Island Games squad were negated somewhat by the high winds that affected the game, but coach Luke Watson was still delighted afterwards.

The senior Muratti captain was joined in the dugout coaching by Stuart Andre, another man almost certain to represent his island this coming weekend.

'I suppose we just pipped it in the end, but we should have won it more comfortably late on and the conditions played a big part,' said Watson.
