Guelpa sets up Eggo clash at La Moye

NINE of the 16 spots in this summer's third Ravenscroft Open Matchplay tournament have been filled, but with the island's two newly-crowned men's champions having qualified by multiple routes, additional spaces have been opened for the big event at La Grande Mare in early July.

Bobby Eggo has qualified by three routes and the Jersey title-holder, Alex Guelpa, now twice over after he won the sister island's title at La Moye this past weekend, defeating the exciting and much improved junior Jason Stokes in the final.

Guelpa will play Guernsey champion Eggo for the 2015 CI honours at La Moye on 21 June and the two will both go into the draw for the Ravenscroft which follows soon after the Island Games.

The Ravenscroft carries a first prize of £500 or the equivalent if won by an amateur and Guelpa is looking forward to adding that trophy to his career CV after caddying for his Royal Jersey colleague Matthew Parkman last year.

While the second Jersey spot for the Ravenscroft remains unconfirmed, the field is already shaping up to be very strong.

As well as Eggo and Guelpa, Royal Guernsey professional and 2014 losing finalist Michael Durcan is lined up, and other qualifiers are Danny Blondel, Steve Mahy, Jamie Blondel, Daniel Griggs, Jeremy Nicolle and George Melhuish.

The place reserved for the Guernsey junior champion will be open until 14 June when Robbie Garner plays Trystan Perkins in the 36 holes final.
