And in the same event in Aldershot, fellow mountain bike team member Mike Serafin also impressed by finishing fifth after suffering a late puncture.

Both men were part of the five-man Guernsey mountain bike team that all made the trip across, with Geoff Gibson, Danny Shaw and Andy Colver all competing in the second-tier 'experts' class.

Roe and Serafin were in the main class and on the course which was on an Army base, both beat some established names in their impressive showings.

With the Games now just over three weeks away, the road racers are also continuing their preparations and a number of them are off to France the weekend after next, on the same day that the five mountain bikers are also back in action in Wales.

'None of our mountain bikers had a great winter because of injuries and illnesses, so it is great to see their preparations going well now,' said Guernsey Velo Club president Gary Wallbridge.

'James is riding fantastically well at the moment and everybody will hopefully be right on it come the Island Games.'
