No repeat win for Horton at Canary Wharf

TOBYN HORTON sacrificed personal glory to help a team colleague, but paid for it with a disappointingly low finish in last night's Pearl Izumi Tour Series at Canary Wharf in London.

After finishing third in Croydon on Tuesday the Guernsey star had been harbouring hopes of repeating his glorious victory at the same venue a year ago.

But from relatively early on it was clear that this was out of the question.

With his Madison Genesis colleague Tom Stewart having been felled from the peloton early on, Horton and three team-mates dropped back to help Stewart in an effort to pace him back to the bunch, setting themselves up for what was virtually an hour's team pursuit effort against the ONE Pro Cycling-led peloton.

Lap after lap the five ONE Pro Cycling jerseys led the main field at a frightening pace, reeling in the quintet of Madison Genesis riders who, despite pushing hard, never looked like regaining contact on the tight street circuit.

Eventually the Madison Genesis five were lapped, along with many other riders, and with all five ONE Pro Cycling riders in the front group the team win was assured. Horton finished 21st.

Highlights on ITV4 tonight at 10pm.
