Top-four finish would suit Marley

GUERNSEY will be sending their biggest team to an away Island Games later this month, but Jon Marley believes that topping the medals table is unlikely.

The confirmation of host Jersey's team in recent days sees them have a record 269 competitors, not too many more than visiting Guernsey, who have in the region of 240.

But despite delighted that this will be the biggest Sarnian contingent ever, barring the home Games of 2003, Guernsey Island Games Association games director Marley has urged caution.

Four years ago in the Isle of Wight, a stunning effort saw Team Guernsey top the medals table from start to finish in their best away performance of all-time.

'The size of our team is fantastic to see and it is good that we have entries in every sport in the schedule, for what is our biggest away team ever,' said Marley.

'In many ways this will be a transitional games for a lot of our competitors because some of those who have won big numbers of medals for us in the past have retired or are coming to the end.

'But if we can finish in the top-four, then that would be a good effort and an excellent platform upon which to build.'
