Mason into the 1500m running

ED MASON took advantage of Michael Batiste's early-season rustiness to push himself into belated contention for a 1,500m spot at the NatWest Island Games in three weeks' time.

Mason, 16, who has been chosen for the 3k steeplechase, held on to win yesterday's 1,500m Intertrust Grand Prix race from the 800m specialist.

Mason clocked 4min. 11.18sec. and was being closed at the finish by Batiste, who has also been targeted for the second 1,500 spot in Jersey, even though he has run the distance only once in an injury-disrupted year.

Meanwhile, in a quality 400m race, Cameron Chalmers clocked 48.87 and four men went under 51sec., which bodes well for the 4x400 relay in Jersey.

In the women's 400 there was a superb island U17 record performance from Indi Gallagher, who took 350m to burn off the challenge of island 800m record-holder Nat Whitty.

Schoolgirl Gallagher, who will be making her Games debut in Jersey, posted 60.41sec. to win by nearly half a second from Whitty, who then completed a demanding morning by turning out in the 1500.

Rebecca Toll ran the 400 B standard with a fine run of 61.51, while among other notable junior age-group efforts there were good wins for Abi Galpin and Jas Norman.
