Travers shows his class at Pembroke

JAMES TRAVERS clocked a fast time of 2hr 49sec. over the Olympic distance to win the first race of the Guernsey Triathlon Club's summer series.

A near-record 67 athletes lined up in glorious, summer-like conditions to take part in the event, which had two distances on offer with the shorter super sprint consisting of a 500m swim, a 20k bike and a 2.5k run accompanying the traditional Olympic distance version, hosted earlier than usual in the season to give the Island Games triathlon squad their final race prep ahead of Jersey 2015.

'It was enjoyable to return to Guernsey and race on home soil with the team prior to the Island Games,' said the winner.

'It was another solid build up race to the Island Games with conditions perfect for racing.

'My final warm up race is next weekend at Deva prior to the Island Games, and I feel like I'm finding my form for three weeks' time where I hope to race strongly.'

Behind Travers, Alan Rowe caught Bob Guilbert on the run to take second place.

The women's race was won by Gail King.

In the super sprint race, youngster Josh Thornton led from gun to tape and was never really troubled with a strong swim and equally impressive bike and run times.

Veteran athlete Jos Ensink took second place with Mark Parsons third.

First woman in the sprint event was Laura McCarthy.
