Green Lions take on double header

WITH a week to go until Ryman South gets under way, a number of Guernsey FC's fringe players will get the chance to impress in a pre-season double-header this weekend.

Glebe visit Footes Lane tonight and then Billericay Town follow suit tomorrow as the Green Lions start their fixture schedule later than previous years due to Island Games commitments.

Steve Sharman takes charge of the team for both games in the absence of Tony Vance and Colin Fallaize, while the missing players list includes Chris Tardif, Alex Le Prevost, Jamie Dodd and Kieran Mahon.

A number of those who are available – including Ross Allen, Ryan-Zico Black, Angus Mackay and Glyn Dyer – will only play in one of the two games.

However, nobody on those lists is suffering from injury and Sharman expects a full-strength squad to be able to select from in eight days' time at Three Bridges.

'We are carefully managing all of the players who played during the Island Games and ensuring that they have had sufficient time to recuperate and be ready,' he said.

'So this weekend is all about getting minutes in the people that need minutes and blowing the odd cobweb off those who need that, ahead of next week.

'Ahead of a tough 50-plus game season, every team wants a competitive summer and the Island Games has provided that, but we have to manage individual players correctly to maximise that.

'Those who weren't in the Island Games will naturally be that bit fresher and will have the chance to stake their claims and in many ways, they are the most important players right now.'

GFC v. Glebe kicks off at 7.45pm today and GFC v. Billericay Town kicks off at 2pm tomorrow.
