GFC's friendly games 'serve their purpose'

TWO vastly differing pre-season friendlies provided the perfect preparation for Guernsey FC's league opener, says Steve Sharman.

Following a 3-2 defeat to Glebe on Friday, GFC beat Billericay Town 2-1 the next day.

With the vast majority of the Lions' big names getting lengthy run outs, coach Sharman was pleased with the weekend.

Attention now focuses fully on the Ryman South opening game at Three Bridges this coming Saturday afternoon.

'The main thing we were focusing on this weekend was a tactical approach and a way of setting up that will make us more difficult to beat this season, particularly away from home,' said Sharman.

'In Friday's game we were really poor and only played for 10 minutes each half, but things were much better against Billericay.

'We came out from the go in that game and put them under lots of pressure and did enough to deserve to win the game against a side a league higher.

'All in all, it was a really pleasing weekend that served its purpose.

'For some of the players that weren't in the Island Games, they haven't played in two-and-a-half months so it was fantastic for them to get minutes under their belt.

'Before the games I told all the lads in the dressing rooms that if they didn't believe they could be in the starting XI for the opening league game, then there was no point them being there.

'Everybody is fighting for a place and there will be some big selection dilemmas to make to try and defeat Three Bridges, which is all that matters now.'
