Cornish Pirates descend on Footes Lane

THESE are exciting times for Cornish Pirates and tomorrow night the Footes Lane crowd have a chance to see a squad who are capable of challenging for one of the all-important top four spots in the Greene King IPA Championship this season.

Following a successful first pre-season venture to the island last August, Pirates have returned this week and director of rugby Ian Davies, along with his coaching staff, are putting their players through an intensive training camp before facing the Guernsey Rugby Club first team tomorrow.

'Last year was a roller-coaster in that we flirted with the top four for a while, but we never had a top-four squad. We did have a top-four team, but we did not regularly have that team out on the park,' Davies said.

'To finish eighth was pleasing for us and the progress we made from week one to week 28 was huge and it was visible. This year we are not young and inexperienced anymore and if we keep everyone fit and challenging for positions, we could be a top-four side, although there are 11 other clubs who are thinking exactly the same way.'

Guernsey RFC v. Cornish Pirates kicks off at 7pm tomorrow at Footes Lane.
