Guernsey RFC 12, Cornish Pirates 71

IT WAS always going to be a bit like playing a modern Siam against Jersey. After all, our sister isle and the Pirates are Greene King IPA Championship rivals.

And the Pirates gave Jordan Reynolds' men the respect of treating the Friday's prestige friendly as if it was a competitive clash and not merely a pre-season warm-up as visiting coach Ian Davies insisted was the case when he spoke after the whistle with the lights on at Footes Lane.

'The buzz words for us were energy and intensity,' said Davies, whose team gave a crowd in the region of 600 plenty to enthuse about in scoring 11 tries.

However, the biggest cheers of the night by far were those that followed the two second-half tries for the home side's Anthony Armstrong and Glen Walters.

Reynolds saw the game as ideal preparation for the forthcoming league campaign.

'It was great stuff,' he said. 'Sure, the difference between us and the Championship is huge, but I thought our line-out was unreal.

'To score two tries was just reward as the lads put in a real shift.'
