Just four more climbs for island cricketers

HAVING climbed one mountain to beat Jersey and end a sad run of inter-insular defeats, Guernsey cricket captain Jamie Nussbaumer quickly faces four more.

Published

Tomorrow in the full gaze of Saturday morning Town shoppers, Nussbaumer's island team take the step challenge, walking the equivalent number of steps needed to reach the top of Mont Blanc.

The following weekend they head off to Essex in an attempt to conquer the World, or to be more precise World League Six and then for Nussbaumer, Dave Hooper and Tim Ravenscroft it is to the Alps to climb Grand Paradiso and Mont Blanc – for real.

The trio, pictured, will spend six days next month climbing Grand Paradiso, which stands at 4,061m, before heading to the 4,807m high peak of Mont Blanc, which is the highest mountain in Western Europe.

The challenge is the first in a series of annual events that the island team will take on to raise money for three beneficiaries. Half of the money raised will go to the GCB Players Development Programme Fund, which provides financial support to young cricketers.

The remainder being split equally between Male Uprising Guernsey and Only Fools and Donkeys' Le Murier School link. The charity was chosen as a beneficiary by GCB cricket partner Ravenscroft who are long-standing supporters of the GCB and sponsor the senior island team.
