Machlowski will start as Tardif focuses on league

TWO of the FA Cup's newest teams will do battle in the preliminary round tomorrow and Guernsey FC will do so with Jakub Machlowski making his cup debut in goal.

Phoenix Sports are the hosts for the clash at the Phoenix Sports Ground tomorrow, with the Barnehurst-based side enjoying a rise every bit as meteoric as GFC's in recent seasons.

They only earned promotion from step six football two years ago – a season later than GFC – and are now making a good start to their debut campaign in Ryman North.

The early-season form of both sides makes for an intriguing match-up come 2pm tomorrow, with the potential of a replay at Lewes on Wednesday should there be a draw.

However, any success that GFC have in cups this season will be without No. 1 goalkeeper Chris Tardif, who has decided to concentrate solely on league matches.

The 35-year-old explained his decision, which he says will not change regardless of how far the Green Lions progress in either the FA Cup or FA Trophy.

'It will be fantastic for Jakub to get a chance in FA Cup games, which are great occasions and with great atmospheres, because he really does deserve the opportunity,' said Tardif.
