Northerners 2, Vale Rec 2

ON A night where the early momentum in the title race threatened to switch across the road, a superb fightback from Vale Rec ensured it stays as it is at the top of the FNB Priaulx League.

Not for a long time has the Grand Fort Road rivalry been intensified by the prospect of a title shootout, but that is exactly what most believe these North against Rec clashes will be this campaign.

Even with Rec three points to the good with a perfect start to the season heading into this Friday night Northfield clash, you felt even this early into the campaign that a victor here would have the upper hand.

But as it proved, North wasted the opportunity to level matters at the top by squandering a two-goal lead that will have frustrated the champions' coach William Woodford immensely.

Josh Addison's big mistake to allow Rory Moriarty's long-range effort to creep in and then Naro Zimmerman's exceptional header were the only real opportunities Rec had to cancel out Simon Tostevin's double.

They were taken, though, and, although they were largely poor in the final third, the amount of possession that Rec had and their dominance of a 20-minute spell after Moriarty's strike meant they deserved this point.

In the weekend's other FNB Priaulx League clash to go ahead, Sylvans beat Bels 3-2 at St Peter's. Meanwhile, injury problems forced Rangers into giving St Martin's a walkover.
