SYLVANS begin the defence of the Stranger Cup tonight as, for the second successive season, the famous old competition features a group stage.

This time it is two groups of four sides who will all have the focus of trying to finish in the top two and qualify for the semi-finals.

Guernsey under-18s again take part and are in group B alongside Priaulx League leaders Vale Rec, Sylvans and St Martin's.

It is the latter pair of those teams who kick off their campaign tonight at Blanche Pierre Lane, with Saints looking for revenge after being edged out late on in their league clash with Sylvans in September.

In group A, tonight's opening game sees North set to entertain Rangers at Northfield.

North will be strongly-fancied to win and also progress from a group also including Bels and Rovers, who will both kick off their campaigns on a busy Saturday afternoon this weekend.

North should also be able to call upon Danny Hale, who has re-signed for the club from Rovers.

Both of tonight's games kick off at 7.30pm.
