GFC to guard against 'Wasps'

THEY enjoyed a fantastic Bank Holiday Monday without even kicking a ball and Guernsey FC will be strongly-fancied to improve their promotion hopes further this weekend.

Less than 24 hours after the Green Lions played out a thrilling 4-4 draw at South Park, the two sides directly behind them – Ramsgate and Herne Bay – were both in action.

Both were expected to secure comfortable wins but instead reverses of 4-0 and 2-0 at Sittingbourne and at home to bottom side Whitstable Town were the respective outcomes.

It means that GFC remain in third place and will cement that spot further if they defeat East Grinstead Town at Footes Lane on Saturday afternoon.

And while the visiting 'Wasps' briefly improved their form as they battle against relegation, their last three away results suggest GFC will still be big favourites.

Successive losses to Faversham Town (2-1), Tooting & Mitcham United (4-0) and Dorking Wanderers (5-3) is a stark contrast to their home displays, where they are unbeaten in two months.

However, one positive for them will be the memory of their away day in Guernsey at the beginning of last season, when they defeated an inept Lions side 4-2 on a day where Simon Geall broke his leg for the hosts.

The other meeting between the sides – only a fortnight later – did result in a 5-1 GFC away victory, though, with Ross Allen bagging a hat-trick that day.

He is in similar form at the moment and with 11 goals in his last five outings, now sits six goals clear at the top of the Ryman South golden boot race with 25 strikes to his name.

Kick off is at 2pm.
