Chalmers sets his sights on 46.5sec.

CAMERON CHALMERS has set himself a huge target for 2016 after a magnificent record-breaking run at Lee Valley Stadium last weekend.

The 18-year-old defied a slow track and the hindrance of running indoors to become the first Guernsey under-20 runner ever to break the 48-second barrier over 400m.

He clocked 47.98sec. for a SEAA championship record and a time that is the 23rd-quickest run indoors by a British under-20 athlete in the history of the sport.

'I did surprise myself because not only is the track regarded as one of the slower ones, the schedule was really tough for this event,' said Chalmers.

'So when I crossed the line and saw the time, I was pretty shocked.'

Next up is a trip to Glasgow in 10 days' time for another indoor meet, one where he expects to go even quicker, especially with a faster track and less-demanding schedule.

However, he is as yet nowhere near the time he has targeted this summer – a 46.50 that, if achieved, would be staggering from a man only turning 19 next month.
