Baker ankle break takes gloss off Ladies' latest win

GUERNSEY Ladies claimed their seventh win in eight National Challenge South East South One league games, but the 22-7 win came at a cost.

The match was marred by a serious ankle injury to Sarnian centre Justeen Baker – one which forced the action to shift pitches at St Peter as the paramedics got to work – but it was a game characterised by solid defensive displays and brave running at both ends.

The injury sustained by Baker came with just nine minutes to go and 'really took the shine off the win for the whole team', said coach Chris Griffiths.

'She has been our defensive captain for the past three or four games and has led the line superbly, as well as being an ever-present attacking force, she was really in great form.

'It looks likely that the broken ankle she suffered in an unlucky tackle situation will mean she will be sidelined for the next five months or so.

'Of course, we wish her all the best with her recovery and she will have all the support possible from her teammates and the club and we hope she will be back in time for pre-season training for our next league campaign.'

It was after the injury that Rosie Corbett gave the wet and windswept home crowd something to smile about with an 80th minute dot-down, expertly converted by captain Laura Poingdestre, but the seven points were mere consolation after doubles from Guernsey's Jemma Crouse and Carly Parrott had given the visitors a 22-point cushion and wrapped up the points.
