Watson clears first hurdle in Indian Wells

HEATHER WATSON maintained her impressive winning streak last night, but she was made to work hard to reach the second round of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells.

Fresh from winning the third title of her WTA career last weekend in Monterrey, Mexico, Watson made a bright start to her campaign in California against Galina Voskoboeva, who was playing her first main draw match in nearly two years.

However, any thoughts that the Kazakhstani would roll over quietly did not last for long as she went toe-to-toe with the Sarnian for the next few hours before her lack of match fitness took its toll and Watson emerged a 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-1 winner.

'It was very tough today. Galina's coming back from injury and I thought she played very well and really made me work for it but when it was important I was able to bring out my best tennis and I was very happy with it today,' said Watson, who will face No.32 seed Monica Niculescu in the second round.
