Watson's bright start fades as world No. 5 Halep progresses

WORLD No. 5 Simona Halep yesterday ended Heather Watson's fine run at the Miami Open.

At 69th in the rankings, the Guernsey player had been the only player outside of the world top 50 to reach the last 16 and she started brightly against the fifth seed, breaking the Romanian twice in her first two service games to open a 3-1 lead.

However, Halep hit back strongly to win five games in a row to claim the first set 6-3.

Watson, who played with a strapping on her thigh to protect a muscle injury, managed one break of serve in the second set but Halep broke twice to take it 6-4 and progress into the quarter-finals.
