Big night in Priaulx League title race

AT LEAST one of the chasing duo in the FNB Priaulx League title race is likely to see their pursuit of North come to an end tonight as third hosts second at the Corbet Field.

Fifteen rounds into the campaign, Vale Rec and Rovers are within six and three points of leaders North respectively, although Rec have only played 14 games.

If there is a winner in tonight's clash, then they will still be hot on North's tail, but the loser is almost certainly out of the reckoning and a draw would play massively into North's hands.

Should the spoils be shared, then North would have the luxury of knowing they could lose to Rovers in 11 days' time and also slip up at home against either Bels or St Martin's.

Neither of tonight's coaches – Rec's Andy Bougourd or Rovers' Jez Robin – believe that is going to happen.

'We need to win tonight to stay in it and then we will be relying on Rovers to beat North when they play them, so it is still not totally in our hands,' said Bougourd.

'As for Rovers, they also know they need to win in order to set up that shoot-out match with North, so both teams will be looking for a win and it should be a good, open game.

'If we draw, then the league title is handed to North on a plate.'

Of the two sides, Rovers are in much the better form as they are currently on a superb eight-match winning league run, which has seen them score 29 times and concede just four.

So it is with some confidence that Robin will enter the encounter, despite being without Sam Hall, who rolled his ankle in the weekend win over Sylvans.

'It is a game that both sides are capable of winning and need to if they want to win the title and we are confident in the way we have been playing,' said Robin.

'Our defensive record in that eight-game run has been very good, as it has been all season and we have all been scoring a lot of goals and looked good going forward.

'This is a massive game for us and we have made it that by playing well, working hard and concentrating on each game as it comes, rather than get carried away.'

  • Tonight’s game kicks off at 7.30pm.
