Guernsey under-21s aiming to retain Ambassadeur Bowl

DESPITE sweating on the fitness of two of his bigger names, Angus Mackay is confident that Guernsey are ready for their first home Ambassadeur Bowl success in eight years on Sunday.

The 28th staging of the Under-21s Muratti is the latest in terms of timing yet, with the traditional mid-season slot giving way to this new April date.

So while that has given both coaches more time to prepare with their squads – this being Jersey coach Paddy O'Toole first in charge – it has meant the hosts preparing a couple of late fitness tests.

Attacking players Ryan Lamb and Paris Pereira – the latter who scored in last year's 2-1 away win – are both carrying knocks and are highly-doubtful to be involved.

If they are, they will be looking to help their island to their first back-to-back success in seven years and their first win in four on home soil at the Track.

The question marks hanging over their participation has meant that Sarnian coach Mackay has delayed trimming down to his match-day squad and instead still publicised 24 names well into the build-up.

'You can never tell with any Muratti because it is a one-off game and are usually pretty evenly-matched, but we are confident that we will win it,' said Mackay.

'This group of players is certainly good enough, we have a good mix of attacking options, defensive options and game-changers off of the bench, so we have all bases covered.'

The U21 Muratti for the Ambassadeur Bowl kicks off at 1pm on Sunday at the Track.
