THE old stars turned out in force, the hotel restaurant rocked to a raucous rendition of the club song – It is a Grand Old Club To Play For – and St Martin's stalwart Henry Davey had tears in his eyes.

The annual St Martin's gala presentation at La Grande Mare was more than just a prizegiving, it was a heartfelt thank-you to the club's outgoing president who, after 21 years in the role, is standing down and taking a back-seat role at Blanche Pierre Lane.

Davey, who has served the club as player and official for 55 years, had no idea that his club were planning something special for him as he arrived at the west coast hotel.

But as soon as he walked through the door and saw dozens of old players, many from his own playing days when Saints ruled the Channel Islands, he guessed something was up.
