CAMERON CHALMERS has produced what has been described as one of the three greatest achievements in Guernsey athletics history after being selected for the World Junior Championships.

The 19-year-old local star, who splits his time between here and Bath, learned yesterday that he will represent Great Britain over 400m, a fortnight today, in Bydgoszcz, Poland.

Despite not reaching the British Athletics qualifying time of 46.50sec., consistent 'sub-47' displays have seen him earn the nod.

'To be honest, although people think that the main thing I should be feeling is delight, it is mainly relief because I have been waiting for a few days to find out if I had been chosen,' said Chalmers.

'Although I didn't achieve the qualifying time, I feel I have done consistently well in poor to average conditions a lot of the time, so I think the selectors have seen that.

'I now have just over a week to get ready before I fly out and I know I am going to have to perform because there are some seriously quick guys out there.'
