The Guernsey runner clocked 46.91sec. in heat four, which was won by Qatar's Abdalelah Haroun, who is the third fastest junior of all time.

'The main aim was to get through to the semi-finals so I tried to go out well, take the conditions into consideration so I didn't work the back straight too hard and then worked hard around the bend to position myself for the home straight, so I was pleased with the run,' Chalmers said.

Chalmers has been drawn in lane nine in Thursday's third semi-final that is due to start at 6.59pm BST.

The first two in each of the three semi-finals qualify automatically for the final on Friday night plus the two fastest losers.
