Rovers through to Rawlinson Cup semi-final

ROVERS were made to work hard in sodden conditions last night, but ultimately began the new local season with victory.

The blue-and-whites are the first side to book their Doric Rawlinson Cup semi-final spot after a battling 3-1 win over Rangers at the Track as late goals from Ryan Tippett and Dale Webb avoided the need for a penalty shoot-out.

Blair Howitt gave favourites Rovers the lead in first-half stoppage time with a powerful rising effort, but Conan Fallaize cancelled that out midway through the second half.

Fallaize was one of several new faces in the Rangers team from disbanded social league team BW Builders, while former Muratti midfielder Scott Bradford also made his debut for the red-and-blacks.

But they were denied a dream start when substitute Tippett curled home a fine effort with 10min. remaining and Webb sealed it from the penalty spot.

Rovers will face the winners of tonight's second quarter-final, which is between hosts Bels and Sylvans.
