50th edition of HOYS gets under way

DESPITE being the 50th edition, the Horse of the Year Show's only aim is to maintain its previous successes, says BS Guernsey chairman Rob Ferris.

The club's big annual five-day show got under way at Chemin Le Roi yesterday morning with a big entry that includes several visiting competitors from both Jersey and the UK.

It is the first year that Ferris has been in charge as chairman, but aside from a specially-built 50th show fence, his message for this anniversary show is to continue with the successes of the past.

'I wouldn't say that there is too much extra special being done for this show, but more to continue with the good work that we have done in previous years,' he said. 'The show continues to go from strength to strength each year and, this time, it looks like we are going to be lucky with the weather – whereas last year we had three days of rain at the start.

'Unfortunately, some horses that were due to be coming from France have not been able to come, but we have a good entry from Jersey and the UK, which is pleasing.

'As much as this show is about the high level of competition, it is also about the social side of it and the camaraderie because any show like this cannot be a success without the right atmosphere.'

Today is showing day at Chemin Le Roi, while more jumping classes take place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
