North's 'best in four years' all in vain

NORTH saw their Hampshire Cup run come to an end after being edged out by the odd goal in a five-goal thriller at Lymington Town on Saturday afternoon.

And it left their coach William Woodford wondering how they had lost it 3-2 on the UK south coast, with a mad half-hour spell deciding the game after a goal-less opening hour.

Lymington broke the deadlock on the hour mark and despite a couple of Luke Mollet efforts and Craig Mollet hitting the post, held that lead for much of this last-32 clash.

But then a double-strike from North – or specifically, Chris Le Cheminant – turned the tie on its head.

However, what proved to be a topsy-turvy last half-hour turned again late on.

A misplaced pass in the North midfield allowed Lymington the chance to level it, which they did, setting up the prospect of another penalty shootout – with no extra-time played in this competition.

That was not needed, though, as Lymington netted a winner in the dying stages to progress.

'The lads are absolutely gutted,' Woodford said.
