Proud Vance sees the smiles return to GFC

GUERNSEY FC lifted themselves three points clear of the Ryman South relegation zone as Tony Vance hailed his 'fantastic' players after home success.

Dave Rihoy and Tom de la Mare scored the goals in a deserved 2-1 victory over Sittingbourne, with numerous other chances to win comprehensively squandered.

But despite those misses making for a nervy ending until de la Mare made it 2-0 in stoppage time – before Steven Ita netted an even later consolation – Vance was proud of his side.

'We asked the lads to go out and play the Guernsey way today, which is being brave on the ball and playing out from the back,' said the GFC manager.

'And I thought we were that excellently, the lads went out and played fantastically and we could well have been four up inside of the opening 15 minutes.

'I suppose the only slight concern was that we were only 1-0 up until late on and when you play the way we were, you are always going to give the odd chance away.

'But we were always in control and when we did score the second, that gave us breathing space, albeit only for a few seconds.

'It is a shame that they did score so late on because the lads deserved a clean sheet today – we were excellent.

'All that matters, though, is that we leave here with three points.'
