Guernsey trio head to Odivelas Box Cup in Portugal

ON THE back of yet another impressive victory, Billy Le Poullain will head a three-man Guernsey team to a brand new challenge this weekend – the Odivelas Box Cup in Lisbon.

Amalgamated Club boxers Le Poullain, Casey de la Mare and Jimmy Lesbirel are all making the trip to Portugal for the fourth edition of the tournament featuring boxers from Europe and Africa.

They will be joined by their head coach Ben Duff, who says this step into the unknown for the trio will be hugely beneficial.

'The experience will be invaluable because currently we only box against English and Welsh teams and compete in English tournaments, so it will be a whole new experience,' he said.

'Out of the 35 teams competing only three of them are British, including ourselves, and the competition is structured so that boxers from the same nations will not be allowed to compete against each other until the later stages.

'Looking through the team list I've noticed a German Boxing Association team and Sweden team, which sound more like national select teams than a club team, so it will be interesting to see what they're like.

'We're going into the tournament open-minded and our aim is to progress as far as possible and hopefully win them.'
