Garland helping Jersey Spartans to improve

DALE GARLAND will spend one weekend per month coaching Jersey Spartans – a move that has been supported this side of the water by Tom Druce.

Former Olympian and Guernsey athletics legend Garland was approached by Spartans about helping to fill a void left by not having an athletics development officer in Jersey.

After accepting that proposal, Garland travelled to FB Fields to lead his first session last weekend, a process he will repeat on a monthly basis.

He will work with athletes across various disciplines in those sessions, but just as importantly, will help to improve the Jersey coaches.

'I can't really coach from a distance, but I will try to up-skill the coaches and I'll also be running sessions on more technical elements where there are gaps, like hurdles and long jump,' said Garland.

'There are definite benefits to both Jersey and Guernsey being at the highest level they can be at, and hopefully that's what we can achieve.

'We've drifted apart a bit over the last few years – it would be good to see a few more competitions between the two islands.'
