Ormer Ladies keen to take on a Jersey XI

THERE is the possibility of an 'alternative Women's Muratti' taking place this season as Ormer Ladies hope to take on a Jersey XI in the spring.

In recent months, around 25 of the island's senior players have opted to sign for Ormer, who are affiliated to the Hampshire FA and thus not eligible for the Muratti.

However, Ormer Ladies technical director Brian Horsepool has confirmed that discussions with Jersey over an unofficial inter-insular have already started.

'We hadn't had any official direct response from the GFA about whether or not there would be a Women's Muratti, so we didn't want to say anything until that happened,' he said.

'But now that they have said it is cancelled, I can say that in the last few weeks a dialogue has been in place between ourselves and people in Jersey over the possibility of an inter-insular fixture.

'It would not be an official Women's Muratti, you could call it an alternative Muratti, but it would effectively be the best of Guernsey against the best of Jersey.

'We were approached by people in Jersey about this because their players are extremely keen to still play a game and it is something our girls want to do as well.

'The players in both islands want it to happen, so I would expect something to be put in place in the coming weeks in time for this season – the will is there on both sides.'

However, Jersey Combination president Charlie Browne has fanned the flames by saying that no discussions have taken place.

'Ormer are coming here in a few weeks and will play a Combination development team – we have that development team that we would like to give games to – but that's as far as it goes,' he said.
