Guernsey Ladies Rugby 10, Lewes Ladies 5

THEY have two more obstacles to overcome, but on Saturday Guernsey Ladies played with the authority of a team who want to finish the season as champions.

Their victory in the crucial top-of-the-table clash at a bitterly cold Footes Lane was as hard-earned as the scoreline suggests, but the home side always had the edge over Lewes who had arrived in the island as Women's NC South East South One leaders albeit equal on points with their hosts.

It was only once time had expired at the end of the encounter that the visitors finally got on the scoreboard with the last play of the game and Lewes deserved that consolation, but there was no doubting that Chris Griffiths' side deserved the victory by virtue of two Tanya Scholtz tries, one in either half.

'It was obviously good to get the first try because it was important to get in front, but I don't think Lewes really got in our half during that first half,' said the Guernsey Ladies coach.

'We were pretty comfortable for most of that first half and then for most of the second, except for a couple of little moments in the second where they kicked into the corner.

'Generally we were in control of the game, although Lewes played a massive part in it.'
