Watson aims to halt slide down rankings

HEATHER WATSON could face her own 'Battle of Britain' on American soil later this week, as she looks to rescue her plummeting world ranking.

A second-round exit at last week's Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco meant that the Guernsey star dropped a massive 35 places to world No. 108 in the latest rankings list released on Monday.

It has put extra pressure on her Indian Wells Masters campaign in California this week, where she only scraped into the main draw after the injury withdrawal of Alize Cornet.

But that stroke of luck has extended to being given a kind first-round draw, where she will face Nicole Gibbs, who herself has dropped 10 places to No. 94.

The reward for the winner will be a second-round match against Watson's Team GB Fed Cup team-mate and 11th seed Johanna Konta.
