It was a mixed Saturday for Guernsey's two teams in UK league competition - with contrasting fortunes for our top footballers and rugby players.

Guernsey Raiders will look back at it with fondness as they maintained their top-five hopes in National Three London & South-East with an important home win over Westcliff.

In a clash between fifth and seventh at Footes Lane, it was the host Sarnians who secured a bonus point success after winning 26-20.

However, it was an afternoon to forget for Guernsey FC, whose relegation worries in Ryman South have increased after losing to Molesey - who had begun the afternoon level on points.

Dave Rihoy struck for the Green Lions but it was too little, too late in a 3-1 defeat with Molesey's win achieved by Rupert Sobowale's hat-trick.

Too many wendyball away games in mid week. Cannot expect amateurs to take time off from work with the frequency required by the fixture list. If you must play in a mainland league at least play in one that has only Saturday fixtures.

When you add the cost of time off to the exorbitant costs of travel to the mainland it must restrict the availability of many players.
