Sawbridge and Simon to make their Games bow

AFTER recovering from two serious knee injuries in recent years, Matt Sawbridge's reward is a NatWest Island Games debut this summer as part of Guernsey's men's team.

Sarnian coach Adam Farish has announced the dozen players who will both make the trip to Gotland in June and also play in next month's home inter-insular against Jersey.

Sawbridge is one of just two Games debutants in an experienced group, the other being Sam Simon, while the vastly-experienced Jeff Stuart is recalled.

Farish was not able to pick Mikey Beausire or Andrejs Vaganovs for the Games, both of whom featured in 2015, but he is still pleased with the squad he has named.

'You can make an argument for different combinations if you are talking about who the best 12 players are on the island right now, but what I think I have is the most-balanced group we have ever had,' said the coach.

Guernsey squad

Aaron Walden (captain), Agris Dulbinskis, Max Hamon, Jason Hooper, Dan Marriott, Jim Rowe, Matt Sawbridge, Shek Sesay, Sam Simon, Jeff Stuart, Ashly Ward, Martin Yabsley.
