Alderney denied in dramatic finale

JERSEY progressed to the Hepburn's Muratti Vase final by the skin of their teeth on Saturday in Alderney.

At a windswept Arsenal Ground at Mount Hale, the visitors were forced to battle hard against both their resilient hosts and a strong wind as they scraped home 2-1 after all three goals were scored in a four-minute period in stoppage time.

Jack Cannon's trusty left-foot put Jersey ahead from outside the penalty area on the right, leaving the home supporters stunned and believing that all their team's hard work and endeavour was going to be for nothing.

Moments later the host supporters were dancing with joy after new cap Sol Bower (17) equalised following a good move up Alderney's right ending with Josh Concanen's excellent delivery.

But 30 seconds later Jersey broke the home team's resistance again as Kieran Lester, Jersey's leading marksman this season, was on hand to net Jersey's second goal with a rising shot following captain James Scott's ball in from the right which skimmed off the head of Craig Russell.

Smash and grab yes, but not deserved as the gallant Ridunians were worthy of extra time having played much better against the elements, by keeping the ball on the ground, and defensively they fought courageously to confidently keep Jersey out.
