Merrien has been speaking about the gut-wrenching news that he has had to stop running immediately to prevent more damage to his lower back, news which was diagnosed in France last week.

But he insists he will be back and he will not let the injury put an end to the sport he loves.

He has not ruled out trying to claim a place in the GB marathon squad for the World Championships in Beijing late next summer and fixed firmly in his sights is a place at the next Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

'I want to go for more major championships,' he said.
